HELLERAU, built in 1911 as a festival theater and educational institution for music and rhythm based on the visions of modern architecture pioneer Heinrich Tessenow and music educator Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, developed into a laboratory of artistic modernism over the course of its eventful history. Today, HELLERAU – European Center for the Arts is one of the most important international centers for contemporary arts in Germany and Europe.
Accessibility
There are two tram stops leading to the Festspielhaus HELLERAU: "Festspielhaus Hellerau" (approx. 330 m, partly uneven gravel path, limited wheelchair access) and "Heinrich-Tessenow-Weg" (approx. 550 m, longer, but better wheelchair access). There are plenty of parking spaces on the site, including two barrier-free parking spaces - one with a bell for assistance. You can access the Festspielhaus via a concrete ramp at the left side entrance. The ground floor, with all its stages and the LAGO bar + kitchen, is wheelchair accessible. The first floor is only accessible via stairs and will therefore not be used for public events during the Tanzplattform Deutschland 2026. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is located in the West Foyer.
