HELLERAU built in 1911 as a festival theater and educational institution for music and rhythm according to the visions of the pioneer of modern architecture Heinrich Tessenow and the music teacher Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, has developed into a laboratory of artistic modernism in the course of an eventful history.
Today, HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts is one of the most important international centres of contemporary art in Germany and Europe.
Accessibility
There are two tram stops leading to the Festspielhaus HELLERAU: "Festspielhaus Hellerau" (approx. 330 m, partly uneven gravel path, limited wheelchair access) and "Heinrich-Tessenow-Weg" (approx. 550 m, longer, but better wheelchair access). There are plenty of parking spaces on the site, including two barrier-free parking spaces - one with a bell for assistance. Access to the Festspielhaus is via a concrete ramp at the left side entrance. The ground floor with all the halls and the LAGO bar + kitchen is barrier-free. The first floor is only accessible via stairs and will therefore not be used for public events during the Tanzplattform Deutschland 2026. A barrier-free toilet is located in the West Foyer.
